New Pup Pawrent 101: 6 Tips for Keeping Your Dog Safe at Daycare

New doggie parents have a lot to learn, including the nuances of doggie daycare if that’s where your precious fur babe will be hanging while you work.

Daycare can be a great way to keep them socialized, active, and entertained while you're away. However, as a new pet parent, it’s natural to have some concerns about their safety in a new environment.

Ensuring your dog is safe, happy, and comfortable at daycare involves finding the right facility, understanding their needs, and being proactive about communication. Here are 6 tips to get you started!

1. Choose a Reputable Daycare Facility

Before enrolling your dog, do your research on local doggie daycares that prioritize safety. Look for a facility that is fully licensed, insured, and has trained staff. A responsible daycare will have a clear set of safety protocols, including proper fencing, secure play areas, and emergency procedures.

Visit the facility in person, ask about the staff-to-dog ratio, and check if the daycare maintains regular health checks for the dogs. This is also a great way to let your dog sniff it out and get a feel for the facilities.

2. Vaccinations Are a Must

Most daycares require dogs to be up-to-date on vaccinations, including rabies, distemper, and bordetella (kennel cough). These vaccines are crucial for preventing the spread of illnesses and ensuring that your dog stays healthy while socializing with others.

At Kanine Social, vaccinations are required and we also have a vet on-site! Make sure your dog’s vaccinations are current and ask for a list of specific requirements.

3. Be Honest About Your Dog’s Behavior

Before sending your dog to daycare, be upfront with the staff about their behavior, temperament, and any potential triggers. If your dog is anxious, shy, or has had negative experiences with other dogs, communicate this clearly to ensure the staff is prepared to monitor and manage their interactions.

Proper assessment and tailored care can prevent stress or aggression while your dog is at daycare.

4. Take It Slow – Gradual Introduction

If it's your dog's first time at daycare, consider starting with shorter visits. Gradually increase the duration to allow your dog to acclimate to the new environment.

This slow introduction will help them build confidence and reduce the risk of stress or overwhelm. Watch for signs of anxiety, such as excessive drooling or nervous behavior, and adjust accordingly.

5. Make Sure Your Dog Is Well-Exercise Before Daycare

A well-exercised dog is a happier dog! Try to provide some exercise before daycare drop-off, whether it's a walk or a brief play session. A tired dog is less likely to engage in unwanted behaviors like barking, jumping, or trying to escape. This will also help them focus on having fun during their time at daycare.

6. Stay Informed and Communicate Regularly

Many doggie daycare centers offer daily updates or even have webcams so you can check in on your pet throughout the day. Make sure to communicate with the staff if you have any concerns. Consistent feedback will ensure that the daycare knows your pet’s evolving needs and will provide the best care possible.
